CEO Announcement

Thato Mfikwe

New CEO

Dear members, followers, beneficiaries and stakeholders of SOWUG,

We are pleased to share the news that the SOWUG Board of Directors has elected Mr. Thato Mfikwe to become SOWUG’s CEO effective of 8th of December 2015. The election of Thato represents the culmination of a process to see SOWUG as the leading Wi-Fi provider in rural and township areas across the country.

With the organisation growing at a rapid pace we needed to have a CEO that can help position the organisation, improve stakeholder communications and scale up the impact of the organisation, while enabling global reach and impact. Mr. Thato Mfikwe’s appointment as the CEO is a move in the right direction in terms of addressing matters that are close to the organisation and social needs within communities that we currently serve by bringing them high quality services, innovative programs on a international perspective and partnerships.

Mr. Thato Mfikwe comes with his current role as Co-Founder/Treasurer of SOWUG and experienced entrepreneur, that has been privileged to attend the US State IVLP - International Visitor’s Leadership Programme 2015 program that has equipped and enhanced his innovative and entrepreneurial skills and capabilities that will take the organisation to the next level of social and economic transformation through ICT Development.

He is a qualified financial accountant from Tshwaane University of Technology, certified in Project Management, Strategic Management and Leadership and knowledgeable in New venture Creation and Market research and analysis.

He has also worked with South African Graduates Development Association (SAGDA), responsible for graduate programmes working closely on Umsobomvu Youth Fund. He worked with Proctor and Gamble (SA) as assistant market researcher for South and East Africa and was a member of youth Parliament in 2006/2007. Currently is a community activist.

SEDA Entrepreneurship Day 2015

We were given the opportunity to pressent at the SEDA Entrepreneurship Day 2015. Mr. Thato Mfikwe gave a talk on ICT and utilizing technology as a competitive edge. He also shared on his experiences during the IVLP programme that was held in the United States of America.

This hackathon is about assembling women software developers or hackers from South Africa and other African countries to unite in solving humanity problems, specifically problems affecting women through technology.

SOWUG Exhibition at NASREC

Today marks the last exhibition day at NASREC by SOWUG. We had a stall up with SIDC and other partners. At the exhibition we got a chance to showcase how the Wi-Fi network works and meet a lot of young people that are earger to work with us.

Wi-Fi Installation in Jabulani

The Sowug installation team has succesfully installed an access point at Jabulani flats that will service users that are within the 4 killometer radius. The connection offers free Wi-Fi for registered users, up to 250MB. On the network there are free sites and portals that the users can visit without using up or buying data.
